Ziezo Research Project
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven – Netherlands
Ziezo is an insulated glazing unit, that integrates bifacial photovoltaic solar cells with solar shading. It is a window system that integrates solar shading with bifacial photovoltaic cells within the glazing unit. Ziezo concept was previously conceived by a consortium of partners: TNO, Pilkington, Eindhoven University of Technology, and W/E Adviseurs. As a proof of concept, Ziezo has been translated and manufactured to two prototypes: 1) smaller size of 46.5×40 cm at the research facility of SolarBEAT at Eindhoven University of Technology, and 2) real-scale sizes that were installed at the headquarter office of Pilkington at Enschede. The prototypes were installed in the two Dutch cities of Eindhoven and Enschede to begin testing their electrical performance. The key challenge of Ziezo in this project was that these prototypes have been designed as a concept based on rules-of-thumb, and developed yet without modeling for its performance. The project is supported by Topsector Energy of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. The work which was presented in Daylight Academy conference at Trondheim in 2024, and Sustainability Day exposition at TU Eindhoven.
